STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Aug. 29 Inga Akerstrom may have set an unofficial speed record as she was chased by a bear while out for a ride on her bicycle in northern Sweden.

"I was on an upward slope when I saw something at the side of the road and began to wonder what it was," she told the newspaper Dagbladet I Sundsvail.

The "something" turned out to be a belligerent bear that began romping toward her at top speed near the town of Boltjarn Monday. Akerstrom made a quick U-turn and began cycling downhill as fast as she could pedal.

When she zipped past her husband, who was walking their dog, the bear stopped and lumbered back into the woods.

Polar, a company best known for its sports-related technology, has created a new on-board computer for cyclists hoping to improve their game, called the CS600. Supposedly developed with the help of six different teams that competed in last year's Tour de France, the advanced little monitor tracks your heart's performance (like if it's beating and how fast), bike speed, and altitude -- but that's just the start. All the data to the handlebar-mounted device is sent wirelessly over Polar's 2.4GHz W.I.N.D. technology (which we think might just be code for regular old WiFi), so you won't be worrying about pesky wires while you're speeding past all the bozos who didn't get one of these to train with.

LOS ANGELES – The 2008 Tour of California professional cycling road race will add 50 miles and stops in three new cities next year.

The event's third running will be held Feb. 17-24, cover more than 700 miles – increased from 650 this year – and add Modesto, Palo Alto and Pasadena to the 12 official start and finish cities, organizers announced Wednesday.

"We are committed to making the Amgen Tour of California bigger and better every year, continuing to raise the bar for what it means to be the largest, most important cycling race in America," said Shawn Hunter, the race's managing director.

This year's race, won by Levi Leiphemier of the Discovery Channel team, drew more than 1.6 million spectators.

"After only two years, the Amgen Tour of California is a great race and is one of the greatest races in the world," Leipheimer said this week while competing in the Tour de France. "More and more of the world's best want to come. I think next year we will see an even better field."

The 2008 prologue will be in Palo Alto, followed by stage one from Sausalito to Santa Rosa; stage two from Santa Rosa to Sacramento; stage three from Modesto to San Jose; stage four from Seaside to San Luis Obispo; a stage five time trial in Solvang; stage six from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita; and a stage seven road race from Santa Clarita to Pasadena, where the event will conclude with a circuit race.

Even in a sport plagued by doping scandals for more than a year, nothing has topped what happened Wednesday.

Tour de France leader Michael Rasmussen was booted by his team from cycling's greatest pageant - just four days before the scrawny Dane nicknamed Chicken was expected to cross the finish line wearing the famed yellow jersey.

Though Rasmussen's credentials as a creditable champion have been devalued since his efforts in avoiding out-of-contest drug testing were revealed last week, he had seemingly taken an insurmountable lead by winning the final mountain stage.

But five hours after Rasmussen put on the coveted jersey, his Dutch-based Rabobank team was announcing Rasmussen had been fired.

"We cannot say that Rasmussen cheated, but his flippancy and his lies … had become unbearable," Tour director Christian Prudhomme said.

That was a stark contrast to the scene half a world away in Pasadena, where Mayor Bill Bogaard was celebrating the selection of his city as the finish for the 2008 Amgen Tour of California in February.

Bogaard, surrounded Wednesday by city employees who biked to work, said cycling was a sport that offered good health for participants.

And Tour of California managing director Shawn Hunter remained hopeful about the sport's future in the U.S.

"Cycling is doing the right thing, but it's painful," he said. "In the long haul, I believe the sport will be cleaned up. That's why I think this is a good time to be in."

However, back in France, Wednesday was not a good day for the sport.
